Kopparbergs Bryggeri is a brand that is known far beyond Sweden's borders, all the way to Thailand and Australia. The brewery has experienced strong growth since its start and sales continue to increase.
Quality has always been one of Kopparbergs most important guiding principles. Therefore, the brewery produces cider and beer for export at the facility in Kopparberg. Continuing to meet growing global demand with high quality and good profitability places high demands on processes, employees and work tools.
The problem
Global quality requirements demanded more standardization, better traceability, and faster deviation management
Swedish food production has some of the world’s highest quality standards. At the same time, global exports place entirely different and even more complex demands. To meet the challenges of delivering cider, beer and soft drinks around the world, the existing production processes were no longer sufficient.
Long transports place extreme demands on both packaging and the manufacturing process. A single small scratch in an aluminum can can ruin an entire container load. This not only creates major costs. It also burdens the environment, creates waste and means that the customer does not receive their products on time.
Kopparbergs Bryggeri therefore carried out an extensive root cause analysis and risk assessment based on both known and potential production errors. The goal was clear. The brewery wanted to avoid complaints, reduce production losses and above all ensure that the consumer always receives a perfect product, regardless of where in the world it is sold.
The work showed that the production processes needed more standardization and that cooperation with suppliers needed to be deepened. The analysis also showed how important it was to be able to quickly handle deviations and eliminate them effectively. The requirement for full traceability throughout the value chain was clear.
Production data is compiled and presented in interactive and easy-to-understand reports that are used both for daily decisions in production and for strategic decisions at management level.

The solution
Digitalization gave Kopparberg the right support for quality assurance at a high pace
The high production rate of 78,000 cans per hour meant that traditional camera-based systems for individual traceability did not work. Therefore, Kopparbergs Bryggeri combined statistical models, risk and root-cause analysis, ISO standardization and data from operations to expand quality controls.
The brewery quickly realized that it would have been impossible to introduce the new way of working with pen and paper. The solution required extensive digitalization.
