Wood processing

Changing OEE systems across several factories is a major step. For SCA Wood, it was not just about replacing a technical solution. The goal was to improve production monitoring, empower improvement work, and create a more standardised way of working across the sites.
SCA Wood is part of a leading European forestry industry group with high production requirements. Comparable data, clearer follow-up, and a reliable platform for daily production monitoring were needed.
Today, SCA Wood has implemented Good Solutions platform at five factories in Bollsta, Tunadal, Munksund, Gällö and Stugun. The platform supports production monitoring, loss analysis and improvement work across sawmills, trimming mills, planing mills and paint shops.
The problem
A complex transition in a multisite production environment
SCA Wood needed more than a new system. The business needed a platform with a clear product development plan, close support and long-term security. At the same time, there was a clear need to create more comparable data across factories, standardise ways of working and make production follow-up easier to use in everyday operations.
The change was complex. It involved several factories with varying local conditions, large data volumes and high demands. The implementation needed to take place without disrupting production or compromising visibility into the business during the transition.
The platform also needed to work for the entire organisation. It had to be easy for operators to use, provide relevant reports for decision-makers, and be robust enough to support daily production monitoring from day one.
“It has been a complex rollout across several facilities, with technical requirements and the need to meet central IT requirements. Good Solutions has worked closely with us, making a successful system replacement possible,” says Bengt-Olof Westin, IT Application at SCA Wood.

The solution
A controlled rollout in close collaboration with Good Solutions experts
SCA Wood and Good Solutions carried out the rollout site by site. This enabled data validation, setup adjustments, and a pace that suited the business. Running the old and new solutions in parallel also allowed verification of the outcome and building confidence ahead of go-live.
A crucial factor was the rollout itself. For SCA Wood, close dialogue, clear project management, and quality in delivery throughout the process were important. It was not just about installing a new system, but about making the platform work in daily production.
”The rollout itself went well. Good Solutions' delivery consultants were fantastic. We had a good dialogue, and our operators found it easy to adopt the new system," says Bengt-Olof Westin.
The user-friendliness became clear very quickly, and the operators could start working in the system immediately, without extensive training.
"I conducted no formal training with the operators. They were, of course, used to stop coding in the previous system. I just set up the tablets, logged into the web application, and then they started using the platform. That is user-friendliness!” says Joakim Norlander, production manager at SCA Timber AB Bollsta Sawmill.

The result
A successful system change at all five factories
The result was a successful change to Good Solutions' platform across all five factories. SCA Wood now has a modern platform that supports production monitoring, loss analysis and continuous improvement in daily operations.
Just as important is that the transition worked in daily production. The operators quickly adapted to the new way of working, the rollout was carried out in a controlled manner, and the organisation received a platform that meets local needs and supports the ambition to standardise working across the factories.

“With Good Solutions' platform in place, we now have the system and support we need. The platform gives us everything we need to identify improvements, understand trends and monitor production,” says Joakim Norlander.
The next step is to build on the rollout
The next step is to broaden the use of Good Solutions' platform in daily operations, particularly for analysis, improvements, and digital checklists and documentation for maintenance, changeovers, and routines, to ensure correct execution and structured, straightforward follow-up.
“Our dialogue with Good Solutions Product Owner is also of great value to us. It gives us the opportunity to provide feedback on product development, understand the roadmap, and work even more closely together on future development,” says Joakim Norlander.
With Good Solutions' platform up and running at five facilities, SCA Wood has a solid foundation to continue working with more structured processes, better operator support and easier improvement work.
