System 3R was established in Sweden in 1967 and is a world leader in tooling and automation solutions.
System 3R makes advanced fixtures, automation solutions, and software for machine tools, which help companies optimize production processes and improve competitiveness through its cutting-edge technology and customer-focused approach.
The problem
Difficulties in measuring, tracking, and improving
There were productivity problems with a manual lathe at System 3R. Lack of standardization led to several issues that affected productivity, team morale, and efficiency.
The team working with the lathe struggled with long changeover times, which resulted in low efficiency, or OEE.
In addition, the correct reports could not be easily created in their ERP system, which made it difficult for the team to identify bottlenecks and areas for improvement.
The operators required clearer “best practice,” and the factory needed help with measuring and follow-up.
The solution
Visualization and standardization created a better way of working
System 3R implemented Good Solutions' platform to help solve the problems, and started with a manual CNC machine.
The visualized insights improved decision-making and enabled operators to develop best practices from the ground up.
They created a more structured workflow with checklists and standardized instructions for how they work with chucks and tools. Quickly identifying where losses occur makes it possible to find more problems and focus on reducing changeover time – to achieve the ambitious goal of changeovers shorter than 10 minutes.
The result
Doubled capacity without new resources
After implementing Good Solutions' platform, System 3R was able to increase OEE and double capacity – an incredible 100% increase – on the CNC machine without any additional resources.
The operators also gained better insight into both their own and their colleagues' work, which made it easier for the teams to collaborate – using production data as a factual basis.
Given this result, it was not a difficult decision for System 3R to move forward and implement the same solution across all machines.
Thanks to RS IoT 4G, it was easy to connect different machine types and brands to RS Production Cloud. This enabled the team to quickly collect machine data in real time and visualise it on the platform.
