Since its founding in the 1970s, VMT Plastic Solutions has grown for nearly 50 years. The company manufactures plastic products and specialises in advanced blow moulding and injection moulding solutions for the automotive industry and equipment manufacturers.
Being at the technological forefront has always been a clear guiding principle.
CEO Marja Mäkinen describes the ambition as follows: ”We continuously invest in business development, and we want to be industry-leading in working data-driven with improvements and Lean. Our growth is based on high-quality, cost-effective products and on running our production with high predictability.”
The problem
Fragmented production data slowed improvement efforts
The previous production systems did not provide enough information to easily identify bottlenecks or use manufacturing data as a basis for improvement work and Lean.
Production information was often fragmented and spread across several different systems. Data such as production times, volumes, and other important information were recorded on paper and collected from different parts of production. At the same time, the teams worked with different methods for data processing.
Production monitoring did not provide enough support in day-to-day work. Therefore, it took a lot of time to identify problems and find root causes. Overall, this meant that the factory could only calculate production efficiency retrospectively.
The solution
A shared platform created an overview and fact-based decisions
VMT Plastic Solutions came into contact with Good Solutions through the partner Novotek Finland. After a short test period, the factory began using Good Solutions' platform for all blow molding machines.
The goal of the implementation was clear. VMT wanted to gather all production data in one system and give the organization easy access to accurate and product-specific production data.
With Good Solutions' platform, the production teams can now easily find data to compare performance, identify losses and carry out fact-based improvements. The platform also supports Lean work by giving the factory facts to reduce the six big losses.
Even more importantly, the platform gives decision-makers at all levels the opportunity to contribute to VMT's development toward a smarter factory.
The result
Better decisions led to more stable production and faster results
When VMT Plastic Solutions introduced the Good Solutions platform in 2020, it became possible to make fact-based decisions across the entire factory. The results came quickly, and production efficiency stabilised at a clearly improved level.
Marja Mäkinen describes the effect as follows: ”The Good Solutions platform provides a holistic and systematic overview. It creates clarity and visibility across our manufacturing for decision-makers at all levels. We gain real-time control over machines, products and essentially all units produced. We no longer need to calculate efficiency afterwards. Instead, we know what we produce, with the right quality, and can therefore offer our customers cost-effective, high-quality products.”
VMT Plastic Solutions is now implementing the Good Solutions platform across all its factories together with Novotek Finland.
